Video Game To Beat Childhood Obesity?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Video games encourage kids to be couch potatoes right? This is the commonly held belief for sure, but this is one that claims to do just the opposite.

Walk it Out, a Nintendo Wii game, is created by Konami (of the Dance Dance Revolution or DDR fame) and can be used the same DDR mat or the Wii Balance Board.

Parents may well be skeptical about a video game that claims to beat childhood obesity and makes their children active; in fact it has been seen that video games are not a substitute for real sport; however this one claims to be different: in Walk it Out, for most of the content to unlock you actually have to walk.

The more you walk the more chips you earn. It is an “engaging” and “family friendly for all ages” according to the USA Today website.

Karma Yoga – Mind Power And Concentration

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

karma yogaPeople from all over the world face challenges, stress, sadness and unhappiness every day.

These negative feelings can come from 3rd sources: things people cannot control or the inside thoughts that lead all the actions itself.

The meditation masters suggest controlling the thoughts in order to reach the balance inside the body and mind.

Yoga is one of the most effective ways to do that. Karma yoga is a performance of actions existing in union, removing attachment, and being in balance of happiness and sadness.

To understand the karma yoga, karma is needed to be known. It is a Sanskrit term to explain any physical or mental action and its results. Karma says that the consequence is the part of the action and cannot be divided from it.

Karma yoga (also named as ‘the disciplined of action’) is based on teachings of the sacred Sanskrit scripture of Hinduism called Bhagavad Gita. It focuses on the adherence of duty when the reward is not to be considered.

Also a person who believes or wants to believe in karma yoga has to be desire-free from desire for name, fame, admiration and gratitude. Considering today’s world, it is a very tough job to do while living in a world which is painted by gratitude and statue-fight.

After giving precious amount practicing karma yoga and being patient, then one can start growing in the spiritual path. The body responds to this way of thinking and the muscles are worked following the very discipline of Karma Yoga.

If one can control mind with thoughts free from negativism, then the spiritual process begins and with enough time and will, karma yoga can be practiced broadly to balance mind and body.

Fitness Curiosities We Are Always Wondering About

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

joggingFitness is important for the health of the body and the overall well-being of an individual.

Other factors, such as what a person does for exercise and what they eat before and after also play a role.

Where you exercise may also assist in the long run. Let’s examine these three to see what we find.

First is the kind of exercises an individual does, such as aerobics.

Aerobics are exercises that have low-intensity; meaning that there is not a great strain on the body and it does not take up a lot of oxygen.[aerobic exercise]

The exercises increase the heart rate; however not to such a degree that the person is gasping for breath.

Because it is low-intensity the exercises usually last longer than anaerobic, which is high-intensity workouts for a short amount of time. The purpose is to get your heart beating at its maximum heart rate without going over.

Comparing housework and aerobics, housework is not necessarily as beneficial because most chores do not keep you in constant movement for 20 minutes.

Most chores require less time and pauses in between. Simple aerobic exercises that can be done are walking, swimming, jogging or biking.

Housework can be beneficial, but not as much as actually doing aerobics.

Indoor exercising and outdoor exercising are another. People will have to decide what they are comfortable with but both have their benefits. Indoor exercising can give you a stable routine; thereby, making it more likely that you will continue.

It is especially good during really cold winters when a person does not want to go out. Outdoor exercising, particularly during good weather, gives a change of scenery.

If a person walks, they can take different routes and enjoy the sights as they are in constant motion. There is also more air to take in out doors than in, but if exercising indoors is the only option, be sure to open a window at least a little to allow the air to circulate.

What a person eats before and after exercising is also crucial. Poor dietary choice can cause lethargy, stomach cramps and other issues.

It is important to eat food before any fitness that will give the body fuel for the workout, but will also digest quickly in the body so there is not food waiting to be digested when exercising begins.

Foods high in carbohydrates and low in fat and protein are particularly helpful because carbs digest fast and fuel the body. It also normalizes the sugar in the blood as you don’t want it too high or too low.

Foods high in carbs are sports drinks and bars as well as cereal, fruits such as bananas or oranges, juice, and bagels. Eating food with carbohydrates after a meal is best as well as it helps replenish water and glycogen for muscles that a person loses during exercise. A person should eat as soon as possible after a workout.

There are many dos and don’ts for fitness. Some things work for certain people and not for others so always see what works for each person.

Video Games No Substitute For Real Sport

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

It may be stating the obvious, but now a study by Muenster University’s Institute for Sports Medicine has concluded that video games, even those that claim to be ‘active’ are no substitute for actual, real sport.

In the study, the subject’s sense of physical exertion, and their heart rates and lactate levels were calculated after they had been playing with the video games. Afterwards these were compared to those playing actual sport.

It was found that the workout benefit and energy expended was much lower in the case of the video games when compared to those that played actual sport. According to this report, the video boxing game provided ‘physiologically relevant, though merely moderate workout.’

Fit To Fly – A Fun And Easy Workout

Monday, January 25th, 2010

TrampolinePeople have always been into flying. Airplanes, helicopters, parachutes are all invented to feel the free and irresponsible feeling of flying.

When choosing to be healthy and fit, there are other choices than using jogging, running, the gym or riding a bike.

A more fun way is the one allowing both the dream to fly and the chance of remaining fit.

While feeling as free as a human can be, the body can also feel better. This is how some exercises that include jumping and “flying” turn out to be very effective.

First, the most common type of flying exercise is the ones using a trampoline. Both children and adults enjoy jumping on trampolines. It is easier to shape up using this type of exercise than many other boring routines.

There are two types of trampoline. One is large, round or rectangular about 12-16 feet and the other is small, round and about 3 feet. Although it seems like there is no rule while jumping on a trampoline, it can be very dangerous if this equipment is not used carefully.

The place to set the trampoline, when and how to use it, the precautions that have to be set near the area are extremely important points that need considering before having fun and doing this exercise.

Except for the trampoline, there are other specific exercise ways to jump and exercise. They do not maintain the flying feeling as the trampoline does, but they might also be efficient especially for basketball players and people who love to play basketball as a hobby. These jumping training exercises include jogging followed by a leg sprint, hurdle hopping and tuck jumps.

For those who have more time and interest in sports but also want to feel the flying experience while in the air, pole vault is the right alternative to try. Including lots of exercise and hard work, pole vaulting can be proven to generate rapid results.

Other than these activities, skydiving and jumping with a parachute are other options to both strengthen human body and experience flying. Skydiving, however, is considered to be a sport, and like all the sport activities, it has a training session at the beginning.

Although it is not usually thought to use an exercise alternative, jumping with a parachute needs extra muscle effort and coordination while in the air. While trying to stabilize the position, all muscles of the body are strengthening.

Like jumping exercises, jumping with a rope also allows body to float in the air for seconds and gets all muscles strengthen helping the body lose the fat and shaping up hips and thighs.

Although there are limited ways to both fly and being fit, these alternatives are very good options to experience the long lost childhood feelings of being thinner, shaped and feeling free.

Perfect Recipe For Perfect Diva Arms

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Diva ArmsHaving arms of which you can be proud is not necessarily a divine or natural gift.

The muscle needs to be shaped into the form and design you want and they must be kept like that by regular training or workout.

Beautiful arms don’t come without effort and nothing in the world is telling us that perfect bodies are simply natural gifts. [Arm exercise]

Kacy Duke, a famous fitness instructor talks about how so many people are asking her the right recipe for beautiful arms like the ones of the First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Since Kacy is responsible for the beautiful bodies of so many Hollywood stars like Bruce Willis, Julianne Moore or Denzel Washington, the question seems rightfully asked.

Kacy Duke says that people wish arms like the celebrities have because they seem beautiful and have a nice shape but also are not over muscular.

For this type of result are necessary muscle groups’ exercises for biceps, triceps, and deltoids. Kacy recommends using light weights of 1.5kg each, maximum 4kg for every arm and flexing the arms about 20 times a day. If there are no weights available 2 plastic bottles or small sand bags can do the trick.

Divas like Demi Moore, Halle Berry  or Jessica Biel are admired for their career and their physical appearance, so if lifting weights got them the arms we all so crave for why not try and follow Kacy’s advice and exercise our arm muscles. Diva arms are only a few exercises away.
